Dental Care

Dental disease is now seen as one of the most important health issues affecting our pets.  To help prevent oral diseases and problems it is essential that we provide pets with good dental care – both at the vets and at home.

85% of dogs and cats over 3 years old suffer from some form of dental disease.  Just as you look after your teeth, dogs and cats need their teeth looking after too.

The following steps occur in dental disease in dogs and cats:

  1. Plaque – plaque forms as oral bacteria and food particles collect in the teeth and along the gum line.
  2. Tartar – plaque will then start to mineralise to form solid tartar which sticks to teeth.  Tartar build up will then lead to gum irritation resulting in inflammation of the gums (gingivitis).
  3. Periodontal disease – Tartar which is neglected and not removed continues to build up on the teeth and over time will lead to recession of the gum line.  This allows more bacterial growth and can result in bad breath, infection, rotten teeth, tooth abscesses and loss of teeth.

Dental Care Plans

We are happy to offer complimentary nurse clinics where you can have your pets’ teeth checked.  If you have any pressing concerns please book an appointment with one of our vets.

Preventative oral care can be undertaken at home.  We can recommend a range of techniques, and have many different products available to help you do this.

At the practice we have an electronic de-scaler and polishing machine which we can use to scale and polish your pets’ teeth under general anaesthesia to remove plaque and tartar.

For more serious conditions, for example tooth root abscesses or rotten teeth, we have digital xray and an electronic high speed drill for tooth extractions.
