Reproductive Services

Pre-Breeding

We recommend, and studs often require, clitoral/penile swabs of breeding mares and stallions are taken to ensure any breeding animals are free of Contagious Equine Metritis (CEM) before the start of each breeding season. This is a sexually transmitted disease and knowing your animal is clear before commencing breeding is important.

Some studs also require blood samples are taken to test for Equine Viral Arteritis (EVA) and Equine Infectious Anaemia (EIA).

We also offer pre-breeding checks and stallion licensing where we can assess the health and conformation of your mare/stallion before commencing breeding.

Pregnancy Scanning

Our vets are equipped with portable battery operated headset ultrasound scanners, which saves the need for mains electricity and no cumbersome equipment to spook your mares!

We recommend scanning at

  • 16-18 days post-service to confirm early pregnancy, and to identify and if needed treat any cases of twin embryos.
  • 42 days – most pregnancies are lost in the first 42 days, after which time the embryo is firmly implanted and is far less likely to be lost / resorbed
  • ‘October scan’ – scanning the mare again at about 6 months can ensure the pregnancy is progressing well. This is also often the scan that studs require to fully confirm a pregnancy and receive full fees.

Other services

  • Post-foaling checks.
  • Treating retained placenta – this is a genuine emergency.
  • Please call us immediately if the horse has not expelled the placenta within 6 hours.
  • Care of the mare and foal.
